NCCP Instructor Course – Adaptive Kayaking Course

Events

June 10 & 11, 2023

Do you have basic kayak skills and would like to learn how to pass these skills on to children,
youth, teens, adults, and seniors who experience disabilities?

The Edmonton Whitewater Paddlers (EWP) has been partnering with the Paralympic Sport Association (PSA) to provide recreational and adaptive kayaking opportunities in Edmonton for individuals of all ages and ability levels. We would like to increase our instructional capability and are offering a kayak pond instructor course. This course will give you the skills to teach people who experience disabilities. To take this course, you do not need to have previous experience working with individuals who experience disability. After completing this course, EWP will give you paid mentorship during our adaptive kayaking course this summer.

Course dates: June 10, 11, 2023 at Rundle park, Time: 10AM-5PM
Adaptive kayak program: Monday evenings 6:00-9:00PM, July 3 to Aug 14 at Rundle Park

Canoe Kayak Canada (CKC) is the governing body of competitive canoe sport in Canada and provides the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) whitewater paddling instructor/coach/leader programs.  CKC Kayak Instructor 1 is the entry level and once the course is competed you can teach kayaking in pools, ponds, and sheltered lake waters. Instructors must complete an evaluation to become fully certified. Prerequisites for this program are a to be a modestly skilled flat water kayaker and to have been introduced to the kayak rolling progression.  To become fully trained for lake instruction candidates must be able to roll a kayak.  Non-rollers maybe be trained for pool and pond instruction.

Please contact Chris at website@paddleewp.ca for more information and to register.
This project has been made possible in part by the Government of Canada.

Youth Lessons

EWP offers classes to kids as young as 6 years old and emphasizes a fun learning environment in order to develop basic kayaking skills. Older youth are transitioned into our youth program (or start there) and are exposed to all aspects of the sport, including whitewater, rolling basics and canoe/kayak polo. There are many opportunities to get folded into the main EWP training group that practices in an adjacent pool at the same time when they aren’t participating and helping with lessons themselves.
